a Wii christmas

Dec 20, 2006 Author: admin | Filed under: Blog, Games

wiiJust yesterday the Wii weather Channel became online and available to all the lucky people who bought a Wii in time for this Christmas.

Users who had the console connected to the internet received a message saying they should download the update to start using the new channel which you can use to see the temperature forecast for the next 5 days of your home town.

Of course you can also use the remote to circle around the globe (very inspired in Google Earth) and see how sunny Brazil is right now or how could people are in Antartica. Brrrr.

Meanwhile, Nintendo also announced that this friday, the Opera browser will be available for download as well, allowing you to, well browse the internet using the television. The only downside is you’ll have to pay 500 points (5 euros) in March if you want to continue to use it because it’s a trial version, until then happy browsing.

There’s a nice collection of screens over at EsferaGames descriving the Weather Channel. On another note, this friday (in Europe) you’ll be able to download on the Wii Virtual Console three new games including Tennis (NES), Space Harrier II (Genesis) and Military Madness (TG-16).

There’s been rumors flying around of Nintendo dropping a few extra presents on Christmas night, Mario anyone?

Finally if you’re interested, Wii Fanboy has released a handy schedule with the launch dates of the upcoming Wii titles in Europe, catch it here. There’s also a similar list by DS Fanboy but for the Nintendo DS. It’s a pity these titles take so long to arrive in Europe. I’m hoping a import solution comes soon.

I’m having a great time with my Wii and I’m expecting a nice Christmas with everyone giving their best on a tennis match in Wii Sports. :P

Note: Can you find out how many times I’ve mentioned the word Wii on this post?

Wii

wii remoteLast friday as most of you have heard, the Nintendo Wii was released in Europe.
The event was a big success apparently since every major gaming news site is reporting Wii selling like hot pancakes (if you like pancakes, mmmhmm!) everywhere.
Around here things have been crazy as well, despite few efforts in advertising (read: none), the Wii is soldout in every store I visited this weekend.
I’ve only managed to spot a few copy’s of Excite Truck going around (I’m guessing it’s the least wanted game right now) and Zelda seems to be the big hit this launch. Wii Play is nowhere to be seen too.

Some stores told me they will have a few units by friday but most are pre-ordered so no luck for a few people.
I’ve managed to catch a friend of mine with a new console so I’ve decided to help him unwrap the Wii and get a few first impressions.
The console is small, sleak and beautiful, it looks something from the likes of an Apple product, the attention given to the packaging is superb. The console is also well thought, most entries are tucked away (like the 4 controller ports for the Gamecube) and the design is flawless, you can put your console on a vertical or horizontal stand.
Configuring everything took just a few minutes, the wireless setup was also simple, connecting to a secure network was fast so we downloaded one of the updates for the console which enabled SD card support for saving and reading stuff like pictures, videos and game saves.
Wii Connect 24 looks pretty lonely right now, there’s not much to do and only the Shopping Channel was available (and each page took AGES to load).
We’ve bought Super Mario 64 and Sonic, there are a bunch of other classic games available for download but some of them are somewhat questionable and there’s no option to download a demo first. I’ve also miss an online version of these, why can’t I play FZero or Bomberman with my friends over the net? That would bring more value to these games.
Having tried Wii Sports I’ve felt gameplay is really good on the mini-games, they’re fun to play and guaranteed to give you a laugh with a friend or too, although finding additional wii remotes is nearly impossible. Controls are responsive and accurate as long as you position the Wii sensor bar correctly.
Meanwhile it seems like other people are enjoying the Wii as well. So, did you manage to get a Wii this friday? Or are you waiting a bit longer to see how it fares?

[update]

Look! Even Dr. Phil is playing the Wii and he’s loving it!

Halo 3 beta registration

Dec 5, 2006 Author: admin | Filed under: Blog, Games

Halo 3Just a quick note to tell you that the Halo 3 website is online and they’re accepting registrations for the beta version.

The sequel is expected to pack quite a punch and registering for the online beta enables you to try most of the multiplayer features ahead of time and ocasionally impress your buddies too. The beta is so far open to the US and Canada only. Ahhhhh!

Personally I hope they recover the online co-op mode from Halo 1, it was a blast and I missed it alot on the sequel. In the meantime I’ll just keep playing Gears of War.

Oh, if you’re at it, check out the new trailer for the game at Xbox.com.
